What is COR®?

COR® stands for Certificate of Recognition and is an occupational health and safety program designation verifying that a company has a fully-implemented health and safety program that meets national standards. COR® is nationally trademarked and is endorsed by participating members of the Canadian Federation of Construction Safety Associations (CFCSA), including the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association (SCSA). The objective of COR® is to provide companies with the knowledge and tools to develop effective health and safety management systems to identify weaknesses that can lead to costly workplace injuries and incidents. COR® is Canadian.

What is ISO?

ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization and is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations. Through its members, it brings together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant International Standards that support innovation and provide solutions to global challenges in business management.

What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 is an international Occupational Health and Safety Management System standard, similar to COR®, that is expected to be formally released by March 2018. It will replace previous standards, such as the internationally recognized British Standard OHSAS 18001. ISO 45001 is international.

What does this mean to me?

COR® should be your focus but increasingly ISO is becoming a widely recognized safety management standard with it’s own compelling business case. COR®, and SECOR® for organizations with nine or less employees, are national standards that apply to you and your organization. They are specific and follow local and regional legislation.

However, with the evolution of the world market and the progression towards the larger global community, your organization may need to consider ISO 45001 for its certification needs. ISO 45001 has a wider scope and includes the requirement to comply with all relevant legalisation COR® is the natural first step for an organization to take before moving into the global community. COR® will prepare you for ISO 45001.  ISO certification communicates positively with regulators, clients, insurers, and investors. It can help also help with tendering (e.g. pre-qualification) and positioning an organisation as ‘progressive’ in its market.
