WHMIS: In Sync with GHS
As you know, the chemicals that your employees work with everyday can cause a multitude of physical and health hazards including chemical burns, respiratory problems, and fires and explosions. The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is now enhanced with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, better known as GHS. GHS provides a more standardized way of communicating chemical hazards on labels and SDSs throughout the world. This standardization will reduce trade barriers between countries, enhance understanding of hazards, reduce confusion in the workplace, help prevent injuries and illnesses, and ultimately, save lives. This program covers some classes of hazards; the components of labels with pictograms; the sixteen sections of Safety Data Sheets; and how all this information should be communicated to employees, including the required employer WHMIS Training program.
