Aerial Work Platform Safety Awareness
To operate Aerial Work Platforms in Saskatchewan, workers need to complete 16 hours of combined theory and practical training in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. This course accounts for four hours towards training. Alone, this course does not certify individuals to operate an aerial work platform.
Description
This half-day course is designed for supervisors of employees using Aerial Work Platforms and workers wanting to complete the classroom training component required by provincial legislation.
The course covers principles of safe operation of aerial work platform equipment for the protection of workers and the prevention of damage to equipment or property. Participants will gain an understanding of the operating environment of this type of equipment and the hazards associated with its operation.
Course Focus
- Review applicable Saskatchewan OHS Regulations as they relate to operation of aerial work platforms, including:
- Minimum training requirements for trained operator of powered mobile equipment (PME)
- Minimum distances from exposed energized high voltage electrical conductors
- Discuss key roles and responsibilities of employers, supervisors, workers and service providers, as they apply to legislation
- Describe the different types of lifts and general operation guidelines, including:
- Manual vertical aerial platforms
- Powered vertical aerial platforms
- Boom-supported aerial platforms
- Bucket trucks
- Describe the rules regarding safe operation of aerial work platforms, including:
- Hazard assessments and controls
- Equipment and pre-use inspections
- Regular maintenance of equipment
- Describe the safe work practices associated with operating aerial work platforms, including:
- Proper fueling of equipment
- Battery maintenance and what to expect
- Safe starting and testing of the equipment
- Different equipment control stations
- Forward and backward stability
- Cooling and hydraulic systems
- Transporting equipment
- Recognize the dangers around fluids under pressure and what to do
- Understand the importance of and process for equipment clean up and what to look for

Course hours can be used towards the Gold Seal Certification application for credits, subject to credit approval upon review. Note: every 6 hours of learning equals 1 Gold Seal credit.
